Afghan Hound Breed Standard
Hound Group

General Appearance
TheAfghan Hound is an aristocrat, his whole appearance one of dignityandaloofness with no trace of plainness or coarseness. He hasastraightfront, proudly carried head, eyes gazing into the distanceasif inmemory of ages past. The striking characteristics ofthebreed-exotic,or "Eastern," expression, long silky topknot, peculiarcoat pattern, very prominent hipbones, large feet, and theimpression ofa some what exaggerated bend in the stifle due toprofusetrouserings-stand outclearly, giving the Afghan Hound theappearance ofwhat he is, a king of dogs, that has held true totradition throughoutthe ages.

Head
The head is of good length, showingmuch refinement, the skullevenlybalanced with the foreface. There is aslight prominence of thenasalbone structure causing a slightly Romanappearance, the centerlinerunning up over the foreface with little orno stop, falling awayinfront of the eyes so there is an absolutelyclear outlook withnointerference; the underjaw showing great strength, the jaws longandpunishing; the mouth level, meaning that the teethfrom the upperjawand lower jaw match evenly, neither overshot norundershot. This isadifficult mouth to breed. A scissors bite is evenmore punishing andcanbe more easily bred into a dog than a levelmouth, and a dog havingascissors bite, where the lower teeth slipinside and rest againsttheteeth of the upper jaw, should not bepenalized. The occipital boneisvery prominent. The head is surmountedby a topknot of long silky hair.Ears--Theears are long, setapproximately on level with outercorners of the eyes, the leather ofthe ear reaching nearly to the endof the dog's nose, andcovered withlong silky hair.Eyes--The eyes are almond-shaped (almost triangular), never full or bulgy, and are dark in color.Nose--Noseisofgood size, black in color. Faults--Coarseness; snipiness;overshotorundershot; eyes round or bulgy or light in color;exaggeratedRomannose; head not surmounted with topknot.

Neck
Theneckis of good length, strong and arched, running in a curvetotheshoulders which are long and sloping and well laidback.Faults--Necktoo short or too thick; a ewe neck; a goose neck; anecklacking insubstance.

Body
The back lineappearingpractically level from the shoulders to the loin.Strong andpowerfulloin and slightly arched, falling away toward thestern, withthehipbones very pronounced; well ribbed and tucked up inflanks.Theheight at the shoulders equals the distance from the chesttothebuttocks; the brisket well let down, and of mediumwidth.Faults--Roachback, swayback, goose rump, slack loin; lack ofprominenceof hipbones;too much width of brisket, causing interferencewithelbows.

Tail
Tailset not too high on the body, having a ring, or a curve on theend;should never be curled over, orrest on the back, or becarriedsideways; and should never be bushy.

Legs
Forelegsarestraight and strong with great length between elbow andpastern;elbowswell held in; forefeet large in both length and width;toes wellarched;feet covered with long thick hair; fine in texture;pasternslong andstraight; pads of feet unusually large and well down ontheground.Shoulders have plenty of angulation so that the legs arewellsetunderneath the dog. Too much straightness of shoulder causesthedog tobreak down in the pasterns, and this is a serious fault.Allfour feetof the Afghan Hound are in line with the body, turningneither in norout. The hind feet are broad and of good length;thetoes arched, andcovered with long thick hair; hindquarterspowerfuland well muscled, with great length between hip and hock; hocksarewell let down; goodangulation of both stifle and hock; slightlybowedfrom hock to crotch.Faults--Front or back feet thrown outwardorinward; pads of feet notthick enough; or feet too small; or anyotherevidence of weakness infeet; weak or broken down pasterns;toostraight in stifle; too long inhock.

Coat
Hindquarters, flanks, ribs, forequarters, and legs well covered withthick, silkyhair, very fine in texture; earsand all four feet wellfeathered; fromin front of the shoulders; andalso backwards from theshoulders alongthe saddle from the flanks andthe ribs upwards, the hairis short andclose, forming a smooth back inmature dogs - this is atraditionalcharacteristic of the Afghan Hound. The Afghan Hound shouldbe shown inits natural state; the coat is notclipped or trimmed; thehead issurmounted (in the full sense of theword) with a topknot oflong, silky hair - that is also an outstandingcharacteristic of theAfghanHound. Showing of short hair on cuffs oneither front or back legsispermissible. Fault--Lack of shorthairedsaddle in mature dogs.

Height
Dogs, 27 inches, plus or minus one inch; bitches, 25 inches, plus or minus one inch.

Weight
Dogs, about 60 pounds; bitches, about 50 pounds.

Color
Allcolorsare permissible, but color or color combinations are pleasing;whitemarkings, especially on the head, are undesirable.

Gait
Whenrunningfree, the Afghan Hound moves at a gallop, showinggreatelasticity andspring in his smooth, powerful stride. When on alooselead, the Afghancan trot at a fast pace; stepping along, he hastheappearance ofplacing the hind feet directly in the foot prints ofthefront feet, both thrown straight ahead. Moving with head and tailhigh, the wholeappearance of the Afghan Hound is one of great styleandbeauty.

Temperament
Aloof and dignified, yet gay. Faults--Sharpness or shyness.
